HERO SKETCH - Alice Munro

The third of my hero sketches. A bit wonky in its proportions, I have to admit.

When I was 12 years old, my mother gave me her paperback copy of Munro’s Lives Of Girls And Women, and upon finishing her short story cycle I was changed forever. Until I read Chester Brown’s Paying For It last year, Munro’s Lives Of Girls And Women was the only other literature which helped me feel somewhat comfortable in my sexuality as non-normative, and in my body as “tomboy”. Munro’s female narrators have also rarely fallen into the category of traditional female, or traditionally feminine. In fact, many of her female characters merely exist, which I found to be a breath of fresh air.

And finally, some of Munro’s short stories have been devoid of plot, for which I am forever grateful.

I’m not feeling very profound today. Her work has moved me. That’s about as far as I can take it this evening.

Check out the bottom of the new [to me] skateboard Julien helped me build today! The guy who pasted this on originally did it backwards, so I’m temped to fix it, but for now I just feel mighty fly using this lovely new machine. [Note: I don’t feel fly at all. I look like a neener on my skateboard and I know it. I love the hobby regardless.]

I received a very special delivery this weekend, which was this obnoxiously tall stack of used skateboard decks which my dear friend Julien Strasfeld russled up from his own closet as well as from our friend Curtis Rothney, who took the time to search around his house filled with skateboarders in order to gather EVEN MORE for me.

I’m very excited to turn these boards into canvases for a series I have in mind. It may be a slow burn, but keep your eyes peeled, I hope to post some in-process shots as I get the ball rolling.

I’ve been practicing illustrating likenesses this past week, and have begun sketching a series of my heroes. Tonight I finished up this Chester Brown doodle. I’m not sure whether it will be the sort of project I stick to or not, but so far I’ve been having a lot of fun pin pointing individuals who I would consider my “hero”.

I was recently gifted this amazing Martin ukelele that once belonged to my grandfather. I don’t see music in my near future, or even my far one, but it heavily saturated my past. Until I can get her restrung, this lovely instrument will have to exist mostly as art for our wall.

My good friend Nathan shot me and my guitar in a girls shirt at a cemetery last week. It was incredibly cold, but, I look incredibly badass. Also a little silly.

It was a lot of fun to play around and pretend to be a rock star. I’m still learning to play guitar, but I’m still enjoying the learning process. I think that is important when learning anything. If you’re enjoying the learning, you’ll really enjoy the hobby. If you don’t have fun in most things in life, whats the point of doing it?
